VOLTA, SEPTEMBER 2024, NEW YORK, NY

Please join us from September 4th-8th at VOLTA NY, Where we’ll have a solo booth featuring work from Matt Mele.

Matt Mele’s Vacancy series features the vacant landscapes and architectural spaces of a resort town located along the Northeast. Wildwood, New Jersey has been a satellite home for Mele’s family since the 1950’s. With consecutive summers and off-season trips to “the shore” to maintain the family business, Mele has been continually photographing the Wildwoods. The Wildwoods cover a group of connected working-class communities that run along a five mile stretch of beaches and seaside attractions. Loaded with mid-century modern architecture and neon signage, the small island destination has seen many changes throughout the years. Vacancy is an ongoing project to document not only the short term, but the long-term effects of a town that relies on its seasonal visitors.

15% of sales during VOLTA will be donated to the nonprofit Wildwood Historical Museum. Their mission is to operate and maintain the home and contents of the George F. Boyer Historical Museum for the Wildwoods, their citizens and visitors. They also promote public support, knowledge of and interest in history, culture and art, and expand the historical, cultural and artistic horizons of the citizens and visitors of the Wildwoods with educational programs and events.

VOLTA powers artistic discovery. Since 2008, the international art fair has supported emerging artists and galleries, at the cutting-edge of their practice, to access the art market capital of New York. The 16th edition marks a step-change for the fair as the inaugural edition with Lee Cavaliere as Artistic Director with a curatorial focus of collaboration, community, and cultural discourse.

treat gallery is a contemporary art project dedicated to showcasing emerging artists and making art accessible to all. Our mission extends beyond the gallery walls; we are passionate about supporting the community and contributing to meaningful causes. To this end, we donate a portion of our sales to nonprofits and charities in need, aligning our success with a greater purpose. Established in 2016, we have a focus on photography and its many forms, but also incorporate colorful mixed media, painting and sculpture into our program. Community engagement is at the heart of what we do. Our commitment to affordability ensures that contemporary art can be enjoyed and acquired by all – we offer work and conversation for both a seasoned critic and first time buyer.

ASHOK SINHA

Ashok Sinha’s Gas and Glamour is a tribute to America’s golden age of the automobile, a time when cars themselves were objects of beauty and the act of driving was celebrated. Those cars are no longer on the streets today, but the celebratory roadside vernacular architecture from that era remains. As an architectural photographer, Sinha wanted to connect with that lost design history and capture LA’s car culture induced optimism and ambition reflected in polychromatic, star-spangled coffee shops, gas stations, car washes, and other structures that once lured the gaze of passing motorists.

BETSY ENZENSBERGER

Betsy Enzensberger sculpts works that create a visceral longing and remembrance of nostalgic delights from childhood. The artist uses the familiarity of those sweet treats to help us remember the simplicity, value and culture of desserts so often associated with positivity and joy. Enzensberger has become quite well known for her realistic, larger-than-life sculptures of dripping, frozen treats. Resin looks like candy. It appears delicious and sweet. The shiny exterior has a wet, melting quality.

BUBBLEGUM & WHISKEY
(SARAH E. SWIST & KEVIN R. MERCER)

Bubblegum & Whiskey’s body of work, Out Forms, is built using traditional materials and digital fabrications techniques to blend the past and present. Each form is first modeled in 3D software then unfolded into a flat drawing. Each drawing is laser cut or hand cut from mat board then refolded into its original form. Plaster, often invested with pigments, glitter, or confetti, is cast within the molds. The result is a series of sculptural pieces that reference rural structures, like sheds or lean-tos, while embracing polygonal geometries and domestic craft materials. The pieces oscillate between cinder blocks and sugared confections, feeling simultaneously industrial and decadent.

MATT MELE

Matt Mele’s Vacancy series features the resort town of Wildwood, New Jersey. Wildwood is a small island located along the Jersey Shore. It has been a satellite home for Mele’s family since the 1950's. Matt has spent all of his summers in Wildwood while frequently visiting in the off-season to maintain his family's business. Mele has been documenting the area's architecture and the subsequent effects of a town that relies on tourism in its summer months. Vacancy is an on-going project to document not only the short term, but also long-term effects of a town that relies on seasonal inhabitants.

PARSLEY STEINWEISS

Parsley Steinweiss states “What we see when we look at the photograph is, at its most basic level, a record of light. I use this aspect of photography as both subject and method of inquiry. I photograph light phenomena to investigate the relationships generated between how we see and how the camera sees, charting the distance between us and our representations. What is the role of the photograph in the construction of our reality and what is its relationship to visual perception?” Through different modes of exploration each piece is an examination of this question.
